Walking out on a pier at about 10pm with my husband, we noticed a series of bright white lights flashing out over the ocean, southeast of us. we initially thought it was heat lightning, but what it really reminded us of was watching the synchronous fireflies in the smoky mountains. as we kept watching, it became clear that it was definitely not lightning. the flashing lights were traveling quickly from south of us to north, and then stopped and reversed direction until they were straight out in front of us off the end of the pier. although appearing to flash randomly, the flashes seemed to be responsive to one another. maintaining a somewhat fixed position straight out in front of us, two brighter lights emerged and appeared to absorb the other flashes, becoming bigger and brighter. the two lights varied in distance to one another, getting closer at times and then pulling back apart. a commercial plane started flying from the north and the two lights, at a fixed distance to one another, began moving towards us eventually flying straight over our heads and continued inland over the condo where we were staying. they were traveling lower than the plane and much brighter. we followed them until we lost sight of them and did not see them again.
