On wednesday, 7/22, i decided i was going to try to photograph the comet neowise. i realized that i needed to do this somewhere outside of town to avoid the city's light pollution. i drove to a rural area only 5 miles outside of rockford and parked on a little used gravel road. i proceeded to set my camera on a tripod and aimed it toward the big dipper in the northwestern sky.. i was not able to get a photograph of the comet. i couldn't locate it's exact position and there wasn't anything around to successfully focus my camera on. at some point as i was ready to leave i turned my gaze to the southeastern sky and saw what looked like a very bright star or possibly a planet. since it was so bright i could easily focus my camera on it subsequently took several photos. i then viewed the photos on my camera and zoomed in on the object. to my surprise, it was neither a star or a planet. the photos showed a bright object with a "trail" of several smaller objects beside it. i should note that this object was not moving as far as i could detect. as i drove back to town i kept my eye on the object the entire way. when i arrived home i was took several more photos from my back yard. it was still in the southeastern sky and had not apparently moved.
