I was standing with my girlfriend near vernon valley lake in vernon in northwest new jersey near the border of new york state. looking to the north at what seemed to be a very high altitude, but with limited depth reference, what we saw seemed to be possibly above the altitude of commercial jets. possibly anywhere from 40,000 ft or above if i had to estimate. it was an irregularly flashing mostly-white light in the sky with varied time intervals between flashes, and varied brightness. it was traveling in a straight line to the east, and when the light was not flashing, the object was very faintly lit, and possibly with a white/blue hue when it was dim. depending on how high, it appeared to be over southern new york state (possibly orange county, or possibly further north). initially the flashes were more gradual with a few seconds or so between swelling to brightness, but the brightness constantly was changing, and then suddenly the object would abruptly flash much brighter (extremely bright and white), and again at irregular/random intervals, leaving us to perceive it as perhaps twice as bright as venus ever appears.
