1,480 light years away is star called KIC 8462852 which for four years the Kepler Space Telescope soaked in data from. Planet hunters analyzing the star’s light emission patterns discovered something very odd. Something never before seen. The star’s light pattern shows that it is apparently surrounded by a swarm of…things. This would not be uncommon for a young star, but this star is no spring chicken. Scientists are not sure what these things might be, but one serious hypothesis being considered is that they are megastructures placed there by an alien civilization to collect energy.
Researchers for SETI have suggested that one way to detect an alien civilization is to look for technological artifacts orbiting stars. Could this be exactly what this mass of objects orbiting KIC 8462852 is?
