FOIA Friday: The 1978 Grenadian UFO Crusade

- in FOIA Friday, UFOs

Today we launch a new weekly series called FOIA Friday where we will feature a UFO related document obtained through the Freedom of Information Act website!

Today’s doc is a November 1978 memo from the U.S. Department of State regarding the Grenadian government’s “crusade” to establish “AN AGENCY OR A DEPARTMENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS FOR UNDERTAKING, COORDINATING AND DISSEMINATING THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH INTO UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS AND RELATED PHENOMENA.”

In 1978 Grenada was keen on having the U.N. take the UFO phenomenon seriously enough to established a dedicated agency to investigate the issue. Several other declassified documents from that year reference this. Naturally, not everyone was on board, including India, although their reason for not supporting a new agency hints at another interesting item under consideration by an existing committee with a compelling name. They proposed that “SOME DISCUSSION OF UFO’S COULD BE INCLUDED WITHIN THE BROADER CONTEXT OF THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE/INTELLIGENCE ITEM UNDER CONSIDERATION BY THE OUTERSPACE COMMITTEE.”
